Summary

The Audi A6 has been a regular within our Beating Spirit for years, but Audi has still managed to make it even more efficient thanks to some hi-tech features and materials whilst also updating its looks. The A6 has always come second to the BMW 5 Series, so have the latest changes made it a class-leader?

Audi has a well-earned reputation for perceived quality and we are glad to say that the A6 continues this trend. The interior has an impressive feel to it and wouldn’t look out of place in the A8. The exterior still remains rather conservative, but it has more character than the previous model.

Audi is keen to make a link between its all-conquering multi-Le Mans winning race cars and the likes of A6. The ‘ultra’ badge denotes the most efficient models and is supposed to draw on the lightweight technology pioneered on track. In truth, despite liberal use of aluminium, the A6 isn’t a featherweight and the ultra model is actually heavier than the previous iteration.

Part of this weight gain can be attributed to the adoption of a 7-speed S tronic auto ‘box which left to its own devices likes to shuffle into the highest gear possible to keep fuel consumption in check. You also get more power than before which translates into half a second quicker 0-62 mph sprint time. The racing link may be very tenuous but more power and lower fuel consumption is a neat trick. The new engine also meets Euro 6 ‘clean diesel’ regs which is good to see.

The A6 is very efficient, looks the part, is very well built, and is spacious too. Whereas the most efficient engines are often limited to lower specifications, you can get the ultra package across the A6 range which Audi deserves credit for. It is a genuine alternative to the established rivals but if driving thrills are top of your list it still falls short of the 5 Series. If that isn’t your prime motivation, and you’re looking for a green executive car, the Audi A6 2.0 TDI ultra is an impressive all-rounder and is more desirable than ever.
