Summary

The Ford Focus is a very common sight on UK roads but the estate version is a bit more exclusive. Ford has been busy developing fuel efficient engines and systems and by utilising them in the estate Focus it has ensured that low CO2 emissions don’t have to be sacrificed if you need a bit more space than the hatch can offer.

Talking of space, there isn’t quite as much as you might think. With the rear seats in place you get 476 litres of boot space to play with, which is smaller than its direct rivals and is even a touch smaller than some supermini-based estates. We’re also not convinced by the current styling, but given it’s a best-seller, we may be in a minority here.

What is undoubtedly impressive is the fuel economy. Ford has done a great job of optimising the Focus with the usual eco tricks but has also introduced active aerodynamics in the form of powered grille shutters which close at speed. This all allows the state of the art 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine to do its thing with the minimum of fuss.

If you’re going to use the full load capacity regularly we would recommend the excellent 1.6-litre diesel engine, but for more occasional heavy use the EcoBoost engine is great and a good deal cheaper. Despite its diminutive size the addition of a turbocharger and direct injection allows this advanced unit to produce 125 lb.ft. of torque and 99 bhp.

The Focus Estate has a lot going for it. If the boot is big enough for you and you do like the styling, it’s a quality product which combines good fuel economy with a sensible turn of pace. If you want to have a bit of fun along the way it is top of the class and proves that environmental responsibility and fun can be combined. Well done Ford.
