Summary

Ford has a strong track record of making cars that are fun to drive regardless of how practical they are. They invented the idea of combining MPV space with engaging handling and the latest model to take on the baton is the Grand C-MAX which is the stretched 7-seat version of the C-MAX range.

The C-MAX is one of the sharpest looking MPVs around. The Grand C-MAX sacrifices a little but it is still a good-looking car and the alterations add to the practicality. With sliding rear doors it’s easier to access the rear seats in tight spaces and the extra length ensures that there is still some luggage space.

The Grand C-MAX makes it into our 7-seat category by the skin of its teeth. Whilst it does have 7 seats the middle one in the second row is narrower. However this allows a neat trick, as this seat folds up and is stored inside the right hand seat providing an unimpeded walk through into the rear seats which makes access much easier.

The heart of any good car is its engine and this is no exception. The 1.0-litre unit may be small in capacity but it produces 99 bhp or 123 bhp depending on the size of your wallet. This is thanks to a turbocharger, direct injection and variable value timing for both intake and exhaust. On the official tests it nearly matches the diesel engine for fuel economy and it’s cheaper to buy too.

Back in the real world the diesel will be more efficient but the EcoBoost engine offers more character and suits the Grand C-Max’s character well. If you want an efficient MPV which offers driver involvement as well as practicality the Ford is the pick of the bunch, and the 1.0 EcoBoost is the pick of the range.
