Summary

It wasn’t too long ago that Mercedes struggled to get into this guide but with a new range of super hi-tech engines that is all about to change. Mercedes may have been the slowest of the German manufacturers to bring fuel-efficient models to market, but the results are impressive.

It took Mercedes a while to develop a hybrid system, initially dismissing the idea as a fad, but with fuel economy becoming increasingly important it could wait no longer. Mercedes has chosen to pursue the diesel/electric route rather than petrol as it believes that the combination makes more sense in Europe where customers are used to diesels and do plenty of motorway driving.

The system itself is relatively simple, and with the electric motor contained within the 7-speed automatic gearbox it adds only 65mm to the length of the transmission. The small motor produces 20 bhp which is enough to help out the 2-litre diesel engine and provide short bursts of electric running powered by the small 19 kW lithium-ion battery.

The E300 has a couple of other tricks too. Firstly the torque converter has been replaced by a wet clutch which allows the system to disengage the diesel engine and use the electric motor to power the car, and it has the BlueTEC system which reduces NOx emissions so the Mercedes is a genuinely low emission car.

The latest E-Class takes the best aspects of the previous model but adds state-of-the-art engines and the fuel-efficient hybrid system which benefits from BlueTec technology. With no loss of practicality and admirable performance the only real downside to the Mercedes Benz E300 BlueTEC HYBRID is the hefty list price.
