Summary

The considerable success of the Volkswagen Audi Group illustrates why platform sharing has become a mainstay of the modern car industry. Intriguingly, sharing so many bits between VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda presents buyers with some unique dilemmas, as the stiffest competition is often ‘in-house’.

In this case it’s the Golf Estate and Leon ST which manage exactly the same official combined fuel economy thanks to the 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission and the respective BlueMotion and Ecomotive efficiency kits that aim to optimise fuel use by a combination of mechanical and aerodynamic features.

The two models continue to slug it out all the way down the spec sheets until the Golf strikes the first blow with a touch more boot space (605 litres vs 587 litres) until the SEAT reveals a moveable boot floor which extends the capacity to 687 litres. With all of the seats folded the VW finally takes the high ground with a respectable 1620 litres on offer compared to the Leon’s 1470 litres.

The two biggest areas of differentiation are subjective and objective. For starters we think that the Leon looks more interesting than the sober Golf. It may be tame compared to the previous Leon, but there’s a touch more flair than the VW. The design leeway clearly ran out with the interior though, as both have very sensible but rather uninspiring cockpits.

Which brings us on to objectivity: money. The Golf is more expensive but does little to justify the extra wedge. If you do need the extra space the Golf is the winner, but if like us you think the Leon is more interesting to look at, just as well built, well specified and mechanically identical then your hard-earned cash has to go to Catalonia.
