The Toledo just sneaks into this category because of its fastback design. Whilst interior space is broadly comparable to our Small Family Car contenders, the Toledo’s 550 litres of boot space is something that they can only dream of.

The SEAT unashamedly steals from the Volkswagen parts bin which means that everything is solid and high quality materials abound, but it looks a bit drab. In the case of the Toledo this impression is particularly stark because the rest of the SEAT range is more exuberant, so it does look like a bit of a VW refugee next to the swooping lines of the remainder of the range.

One welcome addition from VW is the now ubiquitous 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. The fuel consumption would have been impressive for a diesel a few years ago and that’s not the only thing they have in common. With peak torque (95 lb.ft) arriving at just 1,550 rpm and max power at a lowly 5,000 rpm it delivers its power like an oil burner too.

It’s worth noting that whilst the 105 ps engine delivers the best official fuel consumption, the 1.2 TSI engine is also available with 86 ps. With less power on offer, performance is dented a little and the fuel consumption is slightly worse but it is a good chunk cheaper so if you’re on a tight budget it’s a good option.

The Toledo offers the boot space of a Family Car with the price tag of a Small Family Car. The 1.2 TSI engine is very flexible and fuel-efficient and the material quality is top notch. If you like VW design but don’t like the price tag, the Toledo is well worth a look.
